Messi Calls Time on Argentina Career

by Tom Romano

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on more than two decades with Argentina.

The Albiceleste captain confirmed his decision in an emotional message on social media following the 2026 World Cup final, where Argentina finished as runners-up.

Messi ends his international career with more than 200 appearances, having led his country to World Cup glory and two Copa America titles.

“After giving it a lot of thought, I’ve decided to retire from the national team,” Messi said. “It hurts deeply, but I feel this is the right time. I always gave everything for this shirt and I will always love Argentina.

“I feel I’ve given everything I had and have nothing more to offer. There are some outstanding young players coming through who deserve the opportunity.”

The Argentina legend also thanked his family, team-mates, coaches and supporters for their support throughout his international career.

“From now on, I’ll be one of you,” he added. “I’ll be watching, cheering and supporting Argentina from the outside.”

Messi’s departure closes one of the most decorated international careers in football history, with Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar standing as the crowning moment of his time with the national team.
