Martinez Breaks Silence After Criticising Manchester United’s Management: “We All Have to Take Responsibility”

by Bojan Ackovski

Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid has sparked fresh problems at Old Trafford. Lisandro Martinez publicly criticised the club’s management, arguing that the squad lacks the quality and depth needed to compete with Europe’s strongest teams. Shortly afterwards, Amad Diallo also took to social media to express his frustration.

The Argentine defender’s comments triggered widespread reactions, with reports suggesting he could face disciplinary action from the club. Martinez has since released a new statement explaining his remarks, stressing that they came from frustration following the defeat and his desire to see United competing for major trophies again.

Martinez Pulls No Punches: “I Expect More From Our Technical Director”

Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Atletico Madrid in a match that saw the hosts take the lead through Pablo Barrios in the opening minute. Leny Yoro’s second-half dismissal made matters even worse for the visitors, before Ademola Lookman sealed the victory for the Spanish side.

Speaking immediately after the match, Martinez described United’s performance as extremely disappointing but insisted that the problems went beyond the players themselves.

“Last season, we laid the foundations to build an amazing team. It’s frustrating to come here and not see my team fighting to achieve a great result,” Martinez said.

The Argentine was even more direct when the conversation turned to the summer transfer window. He made it clear that he had expected a stronger squad, singling out Jason Wilcox, who oversees the club’s football operations.

“I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest. We as players need to do more as well, but it’s also important to have a strong squad capable of competing in games like these,” the defender explained.

His comments came at a particularly difficult time for United, who are now without a win in five consecutive matches. Questions are once again being raised about the quality of the squad and the future of manager Michael Carrick.

Martinez, however, suggested that constantly changing managers cannot be the only solution to the club’s ongoing problems.

Diallo Adds Fuel to the Fire: “A Disgrace. I’m Lost for Words”

As Martinez’s comments continued to dominate discussions in England, Amad Diallo added to the tension with a brief but strongly worded message on Snapchat.

“A disgrace. I’m lost for words,” the Manchester United winger wrote alongside a photograph from the Atletico Madrid match.

It remains unclear whether Diallo’s reaction was directed solely at the result and the team’s performance or reflected wider dissatisfaction within the club. Nevertheless, the timing of his post, coming so soon after Martinez’s interview, only intensified speculation about the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

Concerns over United’s summer recruitment are reportedly not limited to the Argentine defender. Some players are believed to feel that Carrick was not given enough backing to build on the progress made last season.

The situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for United, particularly as frustrations that would normally remain behind closed doors are now being expressed in public.

Martinez Issues New Statement: “I Spoke Out of Anger and Frustration”

Following the reaction to his post-match interview, Martinez decided to address the situation publicly once again, offering a more detailed explanation of what he had meant.

“After everything that has been said about my comments yesterday, I want to share a few thoughts on what I said and how I feel.

“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration because we didn’t get the result we all wanted.

“Those who know me know that I live football with passion, commitment and an enormous desire to win. When things don’t go the way we want, it hurts, especially when you represent a club with the history and stature of Manchester United.

“When I say I want more, I’m talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club. We need to keep improving, become stronger and have everything we need to compete at the highest level. These are standards we must all demand of ourselves, starting with me.

“I know that, above all, we as players have to deliver results, and I am the first to take responsibility for that. We have to demand even more from ourselves, but we also need to work together to take Manchester United back to the top.

“I believe in my teammates, in our manager and in everyone working to move this club forward. I’m convinced that the only way forward is to continue working together with ambition and commitment.

“My goal has been the same since day one: to win, to compete at the highest level and to give everything I have for this badge,” the Argentine concluded.

Although the statement struck a considerably more conciliatory tone than his original interview, Martinez stood by his belief that Manchester United must set higher standards if they want to compete at the highest level in England and Europe once again.

United Consider Disciplinary Action, but Fans Show Support for Martinez

Martinez’s public criticism of the club’s hierarchy could carry disciplinary consequences. Sources close to the club reportedly believe that a fine for the Argentine defender is almost inevitable.

While no official punishment has been confirmed, his comments have raised further questions about relationships behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Martinez’s future is also uncertain. His contract expires next summer, and there have been no indications of progress in negotiations over a possible extension.

The Argentine international’s remarks have not been welcomed by everyone. Former United captain Wayne Rooney described his comments as disrespectful towards his teammates, while Jamie Carragher suggested Martinez should focus on improving his own performances before publicly criticising the club.

However, the reaction from supporters has been somewhat different.

A significant number of Manchester United fans have expressed sympathy for Martinez, arguing that his comments reflect frustrations they themselves have felt for years.

Criticism of the club’s leadership is nothing new at Old Trafford. Supporters have long demanded better management, smarter recruitment and a clear sporting strategy capable of restoring United’s status among Europe’s elite.

For many, therefore, the issue is not that Martinez chose to speak publicly, but rather the circumstances that made him feel the need to do so.

His follow-up statement can be seen as an attempt to ease tensions without completely withdrawing his criticism. The Argentine accepted his share of responsibility while also making it clear that returning Manchester United to the top will require a collective effort from both the players and the club’s leadership.
