Tottenham agree Mudryk loan deal with option to buy

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Mykhailo Mudryk on loan, giving the Ukrainian winger an opportunity to revive his Premier League career under a manager who knows him particularly well.

The deal is structured as a paid loan and includes an option to buy rather than an obligation, meaning Spurs will be able to assess Mudryk over the course of the season before deciding whether to make the transfer permanent. The purchase option has been set at £75 million, while Tottenham and Chelsea have reached an agreement over the move.

For Mudryk, the switch across London could represent one of the most important stages of his career. The 25-year-old has only recently returned to competitive football after a lengthy absence, having been cleared to play again at the end of July following the resolution of his anti-doping case.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the transfer is Mudryk’s reunion with Roberto De Zerbi, who played a major role in his breakthrough at Shakhtar Donetsk.

De Zerbi took charge of Shakhtar in 2021 and quickly placed considerable faith in the young winger. Mudryk became a more prominent first-team player under the Italian, with his development accelerating considerably during their time together in Ukraine. Former Shakhtar director Darijo Srna previously described Mudryk as something of a personal project for De Zerbi, who challenged the winger to turn his obvious talent into consistent performances.

The Tottenham manager’s admiration for him has never been much of a secret either. During his time at Brighton, De Zerbi publicly praised his former player and even suggested that Mudryk had the potential to reach the very highest level of the game.

That existing relationship could be particularly valuable now. Mudryk arrives at Spurs needing regular football, confidence and stability after an unusually difficult period of his career. Working again with a coach who already understands his strengths may provide exactly what is needed.

Mudryk originally joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a high-profile transfer but struggled to consistently reproduce the explosive form that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young attackers.

His career was then interrupted when he was suspended from competitive football following an anti-doping violation. The case was ultimately resolved this summer after changes to World Anti-Doping Agency procedures, with the Football Association confirming that Mudryk was once again eligible to compete. He subsequently returned to Chelsea’s squad during pre-season.

Tottenham are therefore taking a calculated gamble rather than making an immediate long-term commitment. The loan gives De Zerbi the chance to work again with a player whose potential he has championed for years, while the non-mandatory purchase clause protects Spurs if Mudryk struggles to rediscover his previous level.

For Mudryk, there may be few better places to begin again. His best period at Shakhtar came with De Zerbi guiding him, and their reunion in north London now offers the Ukrainian an opportunity to turn a difficult chapter into a fresh start.
