The future of European basketball could be heading for a major turning point, with the NBA reportedly considering a potential takeover of the EuroLeague.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, a possible NBA proposal could be discussed when EuroLeague club owners meet on October 5 at Lake Como. Olimpia Milano will organize the meeting, which could prove crucial for the long-term direction of Europe’s leading club competition.
Meetings involving EuroLeague club owners are relatively rare and are generally reserved for major strategic decisions. This time, the potential involvement of the NBA is expected to be among the most important subjects.
No formal takeover offer has been publicly confirmed yet. However, talks between the NBA and EuroLeague have been ongoing, while the NBA is also working with FIBA on plans for its own European competition.
The proposed NBA Europe league is currently targeted for an October 2027 launch, potentially creating direct competition for EuroLeague unless the two sides find a way to work together.
If an agreement with the NBA is not reached, EuroLeague has an alternative plan for its future.
The competition is considering expanding to 24 teams from the 2027/28 season, with as many as eight new long-term franchises potentially joining the league.
Such a move would strengthen EuroLeague’s franchise-based model and expand its presence across major European markets at the same time the NBA is looking to establish a stronger footprint on the continent.
The October 5 meeting could therefore become a decisive moment for European club basketball.
EuroLeague owners may have to choose between deeper cooperation with the NBA, potentially including some form of takeover, and continuing with their own expansion strategy.
With both EuroLeague and the NBA preparing major plans for 2027, the decisions made in the coming weeks could determine whether the two organizations eventually join forces or continue being competitors.
