Barcelona have suffered another setback in defence, with young fullback Xavi Espart expected to be sidelined for around seven weeks after picking up an injury against Real Madrid, the Catalan club have confirmed.
Espart sustained the injury during Sunday’s El Clásico, which Barcelona lost 2-1. The 19-year-old felt pain following a challenge involving Aurélien Tchouaméni and was forced off in the 30th minute, with Alejandro Balde coming on to replace him.
Barcelona Confirm Recovery Timeline
Medical tests revealed a syndesmosis injury to Espart’s right ankle, affecting the ligaments that connect the two bones of the lower leg. According to Barcelona’s official statement, the young defender is expected to be out of action for approximately seven weeks.
Espart’s injury adds to Barcelona’s growing defensive concerns. Hansi Flick is already dealing with the absences of Eric García and Andreas Christensen, while Jules Koundé is also struggling with fitness issues.
With a demanding run of fixtures ahead, Barcelona will need to find solutions at the back as their defensive options continue to dwindle.
