Manchester United have been dealt another setback at a time when the team is already struggling on the pitch. Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko is set to miss the remainder of 2026 with a lower-leg injury, with his return not expected until January at the earliest.
The 23-year-old will continue his rehabilitation after further medical assessments revealed that he needs more time to recover. Sesko last featured on September 16, when United suffered a defeat to Brighton in the League Cup.
United Unwilling to Take Risks with Sesko’s Recovery
Sesko’s injury troubles are nothing new. The Slovenian was dealing with lower-leg problems towards the end of last season, forcing him to miss United’s final three Premier League matches as well as the summer pre-season preparations.
Following consultations with specialists, United’s medical staff have decided to continue with a conservative approach, prioritising rest and rehabilitation over surgery.
The club are determined not to rush Sesko back into action and want to give him enough time to make a full recovery, reducing the risk of another setback.
Another Headache for Michael Carrick
Sesko’s absence adds to the growing problems facing Michael Carrick, whose side have endured a difficult run of results. Manchester United currently sit 16th in the Premier League, and the lack of a recognised centre-forward has left Carrick with limited options in attack.
The Slovenian international has scored twice in six appearances this season, but he will now be forced to watch from the sidelines as United prepare for crucial fixtures against Liverpool and Arsenal, along with several Champions League matches.
With a challenging few weeks ahead for the Red Devils, Sesko’s priority is clear: completing his recovery and returning fully fit in 2027.
