Drama in Portugal: Ronaldo Leaves National Team Camp and Vows to Reveal the “Truth”

by Bojan Ackovski

The Portuguese national team has found itself at the center of a major football controversy after Cristiano Ronaldo unexpectedly left the squad’s camp in Copenhagen, just one day before the Nations League match against Denmark.

The 41-year-old captain made the decision shortly after head coach Jorge Jesus’ press conference, while Ronaldo himself announced that he would reveal the reasons behind his departure at a later stage.

From the Bench Against Norway to a Sudden Departure From Camp

The tension began after Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway. Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire match and, after the final whistle, headed straight to the dressing room without joining his teammates in acknowledging the Portuguese supporters.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the match against Denmark, Jorge Jesus insisted that there was no serious conflict between him and the captain.

He admitted that it was understandable for a player who had been warming up for 20 or 30 minutes and was then not brought on to feel frustrated. However, he stressed that the decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench was purely a coaching decision and that there had been “no incident” between them.

Jesus also revealed that he intended to start Gonçalo Ramos against Denmark.

“If everything goes according to plan, Gonçalo will play. If I need Cristiano, he will come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t,” the Portugal coach said.

Only a few hours later, however, the situation took a completely different turn.

Ronaldo arrived with the team at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen but did not take part in training. Portuguese media published footage showing him leaving the stadium, before the player himself confirmed that he was departing the national team camp.

In his message, Ronaldo directly linked his decision to the coach’s press conference and to a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

“I have made the decision to leave the national team camp,” Ronaldo wrote, adding that “in due course” he would tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons behind his departure.

He ended his message by wishing Portugal and all of his teammates, “without exception,” the best of luck.

The Portuguese Football Federation later officially confirmed that Ronaldo had left the camp and announced that preparations would continue with the remaining 24 players.

What Really Happened Between Them?

The reason behind Ronaldo’s strong reaction has still not been officially explained by the player himself.

However, Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, who is publicly known to be a close friend of the Portuguese star, presented a version of events during the television programme El Chiringuito.

According to Aguirre, a meeting took place on Tuesday involving Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

Aguirre claims that Jesus privately apologised to Ronaldo for making him warm up for around half an hour against Norway before ultimately deciding not to bring him on. He also allegedly promised that he would publicly acknowledge that the situation had been handled poorly.

According to Aguirre, the subsequent press conference proved to be the turning point.

Instead of issuing a public apology, Jesus emphasised his authority as head coach and maintained that decisions regarding the starting line-up and substitutions applied equally to all players.

According to the version presented by Aguirre, Ronaldo felt “betrayed” and decided to leave the camp.

Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, also reacted to the situation. She shared a message stating that Ronaldo “deserved more respect,” that the national team deserved a better structure and that Portuguese journalism needed “more competence and less speculation.”

As a result, the situation has moved beyond a simple sporting decision over the starting line-up and developed into a wider dispute surrounding the treatment of the most successful international player in Portuguese football history.

Number 7 Already Has a New Owner; What Comes Next for Ronaldo?

Ronaldo’s departure immediately brought about a symbolic change within the Portuguese squad.

On UEFA’s official squad list for the match against Denmark, Rafael Leão was listed as Portugal’s new number 7, while Fábio Silva took the number 17 shirt previously worn by Leão.

However, this does not in itself mean that Ronaldo has officially retired from international football.

Neither Ronaldo nor the Portuguese Football Federation has announced that he has permanently ended his career with the national team.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time record holder with 234 appearances and 146 goals, while his sudden departure has raised serious questions over whether he will play for the national team again under Jorge Jesus.

For now, the most significant statement has come from the captain himself:

“In due course, I will tell the truth.”

As Portugal continues its international campaign without its long-time number 7, Ronaldo’s full version of what happened in Copenhagen is still to come.

Only then may it become clearer whether this is a temporary dispute with the head coach or a moment that could permanently change his relationship with the Portuguese national team.
